Mobile patent war expands

Telecommunications company Ericsson said it sued Apple in Germany, the UK and the Netherlands as it ratcheted up a global licensing battle between the companies.

The suits add to U.S. filings seeking a patent-licensing agreement for technologies fundamental to the way mobile devices communicate and for intellectual property related to user interfaces, batteries and operating systems. Apple continues to sell products globally without a license from Ericsson, the wireless-network maker said Friday.

Regardless of who the company is, everybody needs to take a license for the technologies we are providing to them, according to Ericsson.

The number of patent applications once again increased. In 2015, 1.6% more applications were filed at the European Patent Office (EPO). In recent years the number of applications actually increased constantly. A small dip in 2009, but this was offset by a very large increase in 2010. In total, they filed in 2015 278,867 patent applications.
